Were you always planning to be an accountant and why?

I didn't always plan to be an accountant however, I completed the AAT level 2 to enable me to progress in a credit control role and I found accountancy was my passion! I quickly completed AAT level 3, then moved on to be come a chartered accountant through ACCA

When meeting with clients, do they mostly come to your premises or do you mostly go to theirs?

We work remotely with most of out clients

What is your preferred mode of communication with your clients?

Email, Phone, WhatsApp

Have you ever done an online video call with a client?

Yes

What do you love most about accounting?

I enjoy analysing financial information to identify risks, correct inefficiencies and bring clarity to situations that initially appear complicated. I enjoy the structure and clarity being an accountant can bring to a business

Would you recommend accounting as a career for school-leavers, and why?

Yes. Accounting provides a globally recognised skillset. It opens doors to business leadership, entrepreneurship and international opportunities for those prepared to work hard, and those who enjoy being the subject matter expert.

What qualities should South African business people be looking for in their accountant?

South African business owners should look for an accountant who combines technical accuracy with commercial insight. They should be proactive problem-solvers, communicate clearly, act with integrity, and provide responsive support to help the business grow safely and efficiently.

What is the biggest challenge facing accountants today?

The biggest challenge today is navigating constantly changing laws and regulations while ensuring the information clients provide is accurate and complete. Accountants must interpret complex rules, verify data, and provide reliable advice despite these uncertainties.

What aspects of accounting do you focus on most?

I focus on providing accurate financial reporting, ensuring tax and compliance obligations are met, and offering practical business advisory. I prioritise clarity, risk management, and actionable insights that help businesses make informed decisions and operate efficiently.

Describe your average client:

My average client is an established, owner-managed business with annual turnover between R5 million and R20 million. They value accurate financial reporting, disciplined compliance, and practical advice to improve efficiency, manage risk, and support sustainable growth.

How far away from your premises is your furthest client?

We are based in Winklespruit, Durban and have clients as far away as Cape Town

From your accounting experience, if you could cite one of the biggest reasons SMEs in SA fail, what would it be?

One of the biggest reasons SMEs in South Africa fail is the lack of separation between personal and business finances. Once personal expenses are removed, owners often realise they have not set aside enough for tax, and without clear records they cannot accurately track profitability or manage cash flow effectively.

What accounting software do you like best?

Quickbooks is affordable for clients and very intuitive

What other software, online services or apps do you use?

Xero, SimplePay, Sage, Zoho

Do you think the coming wave of automation in the next few years will steal some accounting jobs and why/why not?

No. I believe automation will handle routine data entry, freeing up time for accountants to analyse transactions more deeply, provide strategic insight, and focus on risk management and business advisory rather than manual processing.

What is your opinion on Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is gaining traction and attracting increasing interest from investors and businesses. While I monitor its growth, my focus remains on helping clients navigate established financial and compliance matters.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time outdoors along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, keeping active, and reading about business, finance, and personal development. It helps me recharge while staying curious about the world of business.

What is the most interesting thing on your bucket list?

I would love to travel to Costa Rica to see the sloths or to Japan and see the Cherry Blossoms
